Kailee Mills, 16, holds a special place in the hearts of many Spring Firefighters who were on the scene of her tragic accident. Her story is

On October 28, 2017, Kailee left her home to go to a Hallowe’en party. She was in the backseat of a car when it veered off the road and rolled over – just a short distance from her home.

Kailee had taken off her seatbelt to take a selfie with a friend, but that split second decision claimed a “ray of sunshine”, as her parents called her. Ejected from the vehicle, Kailee died instantly. Her three friends who were wearing seatbelts suffered only minor injuries.

Kailee’s friends were shocked because Kailee, a 4.3 GPA student at Klein Collins High School in Spring, was always telling people to buckle up. Her dreams of being a Texas A&M Aggie ended that day and her family’s mission was born.

Today, the Mills family puts their hearts and souls into the Kailee Mills Foundation — telling Kailee’s story to get others to buckle up. Car accidents are the leading cause of death for Americans ages 1-54.

Her heartbroken parents want seat belt use to be 100% every day, every ride.

This is their message:

  • Always put on your seat belt—whether you are the driver or a passenger—BEFORE the vehicle is in motion.
  • Make sure everyone in your vehicle is buckled up too!
  • Talk to your children and CONTINUE talking to them about the importance of wearing a seat belt and what the risks are when you do not wear a seatbelt.
  • Parents, the responsibility behind the wheel is on us, too. How often do we, as adults, get in a hurry to get to our destination and not buckle up?
  • It only takes three seconds to fasten your seat belt … we timed it with a stopwatch. Those three seconds can change your life and the lives of those who know and love you.
  • How often do we unbuckle our seatbelts when we get close to our destinations? It takes NO effort to keep your seatbelt on until you arrive safely.
  • Drive responsibly. It’s not worth your life or your passenger’s life.
  • Finally, know that if you have children, you are setting the driving example every time you get in the car, so PLEASE buckle-up, every trip, every mile!
