Pet Microchip Program
Every Fire Station
All nine Spring Fire Stations are equipped with pet microchip readers and over a hundred animals have been reunited since this program began in 2019.
Here is how it works. Anyone who finds a lost dog or cat can take the pet to the nearest Spring Fire Station where firefighters can check the animal for a microchip.
If no one answers the doorbell, the crew may be on an emergency call. You can come back later or try another station. However, for their safety pets cannot be left at any fire station.
What’s Next?
If the microchip reader displays a number, the American Animal Hospital Association’s PetMicrochipLookup.org should show which microchip company may have registration information for the animal.
If the pet is (1) found within Spring Fire’s response territory, (2) checked for a microchip at a Spring Fire Station and (3) the rescuer, or a local rescue or foster, is willing to hold the pet, then the Spring Fire Department can post photos of the animal on social media in an attempt to find their family. Unfortunately, Spring Fire cannot accept photos of missing pets for posting.
Rescuers are not asked to hold any animal longer than a week. Pet reunions and vetting of ownership are handled by the rescuer once the owner is located.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
What about dangerous, wounded or abused animals?
Keep your distance from any animal that appears to be dangerous and contact Harris County Pets at (281) 999-3191.
If an animal is wounded, cannot eat, drink, or move normally, or has been trapped, contact the Houston SPCA at 713-880-HELP (4357) immediately for an animal ambulance. Wounded animals can also be dangerous.
Texas Health and Safety Code Title 10, Chapter 821, Subchapter A is Texas law for treatment of animals. If you witness animal abuse, cruelty or neglect, file a report with the Harris County Animal Cruelty Taskforce. Call 888-7-SETACT (888-773-8228). All reports are reviewed by an investigator with the animal crimes unit.
What about wild animals?
Contact the Wildlife Center of Texas located at 7007 Old Katy Road, Houston, TX 77024.
Their phone number is 713-861-9453 and they are open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily.
I lost my animal, what should I do?
Check and post on lost pet websites such as Pawboost, my lost pet alert, Pet FBI, Petco Love Lost, Lost My Doggie, Pet Amber Alert, and PawMaw.
Check and post on local lost pet social media pages, such as Spring Texas Lost and Found Pets, SPRING and MORE-Lost and Found Animals, Lost & Found Pets of Spring, TX, Lost & Found Pets -The Woodlands, Spring, Tomball, TX, Lost & Found Cats – Spring, The Woodlands, Conroe and Nearby Places, and CyFair Spring Tomball Lost & Found Pets. There are also many breeds specific lost animal pages on Facebook alone, so this list while not inclusive is a good start.
Posting a lost or found animal any or all of these places, on your personal social media or social media tied specifically to Spring, such as nextdoor and Ring.com can dramatically increase your chances of finding the family.
Flyers and posters can also be valuable resources when placed near where the pet was lost or found. Make one on 24PetWatch, Poster My Wall, Canva, Pet FBI or your favorite design program.
