Spring Fire Station 77 is getting a much-needed new foundation and functional facelift.
Spring Fire Chief Scott Seifert made the announcement on July 22.
“Station 77 was built during the 2011 drought and within about five years we began seeing foundation issues,” said Spring Fire Chief Scott Seifert. “Unfortunately, these issues have worsened over time.”
“The outside of the station won’t be visibly different from when it opened a dozen years ago,” said Spring Fire Chief Scott Seifert. “However, as a new foundation is laid for the building much of the inside will be reconfigured.”
Construction on the over $3 million project begins August 1 and is estimated to be completed by summer 2025.
The decision to completely replace the foundation provided an opportunity to reconfigure the interior. A design committee was formed with command, facilities, administration and the three Station 77 captains. “Station 77 is their second home, so the crews’ input was essential to ensuring the changes enhance their ability to serve,” added Seifert. “The committee and local architects who specialize in first response buildings put together a great redesign.”
Function was at the heart of the redesign, according to Martinez First Response Architects.
In the reconfiguration, the kitchen appliances are being upgraded and a watch room, new computer workstations and a tankless water heater are being added.
Dorm rooms, restrooms and storage spaces will be maximized in the new configuration.
The firefighters’ workout area, which is currently in the fire engine bay, will move inside the living area freeing up a bay for additional fire and rescue equipment.
One thing won’t change. “Engine 77 will remain in service 24/7/365 throughout the construction,” said Seifert. “Starting on July 29, Engine 77 will relocate to Spring Fire Station 75 on FM 2920. Response times will not be significantly impacted.”
“I am very excited for the station remodel,” said 77 B-Shift and design committee member Captain Tim Weiman. “I believe the changes will be a very efficient use of space allowing this station to serve our community for many years to come.”
“The department has changed dramatically since this station opened in 2012,” concluded Seifert. “The time is right for Station 77’s upgrade.”
